Rather

Rather es un adverbio de grado, tiene mayor intensidad que fairly pero menos intensidad  que very.
Puede modificar a un sustantivo, el cual se escribe normalmente con un artículo. Puede modificar a algunos verbos.
Rather significa  mas de lo usual o de lo deseado

 rather a / a rather + adjetivo  +
He`s got rather a/ a rather good point saying so.
El hizo bastante bien en decir eso.

Podemos usarlo sin  "a" cuando la idea de la oración es corta y completa


Rather + adjetivo 
Rather = bastante, demasiado
The film was rather good. / La pelicula fué bastante buena.
It happened rather quickly. / Esto ocurrió demasiado rápido.

Se usa para expresar preferencia o para comparar estructura paralelas:
rather + adjetivo + than ( forma comparativa) sustantivo + verbo

She's rather tall than I expected. / Ella es mucho más alta de lo que yo esperaba.




Rather  than = con significado de "En lugar de"


Rather than + articulo + sustantivo
Let`s take the train rather than the bus. / Tomemos el tren en lugar del autobús.



Rather + sujeto + than + pronombre
Rather + sujeto,pronombre +  than    +   pronombre,sujeto
Rather you than me. / Mejor tu en  mi lugar.




Would rather:Se interpreta como Prefiero,preferiria o en lugar de



Preferencia en presente..........
Would rather + verbo sin to


I would rather leave now./ Prefiero irme ahora

Preferiria que..........

Would rather  +   pronombre   +  verbo en pasado simple

I would rather he came early./Preferiria que viniera (Subjuntivo ,que viniera ) temprano
